Choose between a territory-wide break and a local one

Territory-wide full-day holidays are the clearest starting point when coordinating an NT household or business. May Day, the King’s Birthday and Picnic Day each fall on Mondays in 2027. A regional show holiday is useful only after confirming which official region applies to the workplace.

A group travelling from Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs may not share the same show-day Friday. Use a territory-wide break as the initial comparison, then work out any extra leave required for a local option. The NT 2027 calendar separates those categories.

Easter: extend four days to ten

The standard Easter break runs Friday 26 to Monday 29 March 2027. Taking Tuesday 30 March through Friday 2 April as four approved leave weekdays joins the next weekend, making ten consecutive days away through Sunday 4 April for a standard Monday-to-Friday roster.

This is a calendar calculation rather than a promise of a particular travel experience. Once you choose a period, check current access, operating schedules and booking conditions for the destination. Public holiday dates do not establish road conditions or whether a tour will operate.

May Day and Picnic Day: nine-day options

May Day is Monday 3 May. Approved leave on 4–7 May can join the weekends on both sides, creating nine days from Saturday 1 to Sunday 9 May. Picnic Day on Monday 2 August works the same way with leave on 3–6 August, giving Saturday 31 July to Sunday 8 August.

Both examples use four leave weekdays and assume weekends are normally non-working. Compare which dates fit your roster, family commitments and travel time. A different roster requires a new calculation rather than copying the same leave count.

Australia Day and ANZAC Day use different structures

Tuesday 26 January is Australia Day. With Monday 25 January approved as leave, a standard weekend roster can have four days away from 23–26 January. The NT’s observed ANZAC Day holiday is Monday 26 April 2027, giving a three-day break from 24–26 April for that roster.

ANZAC Day’s commemorative date remains 25 April. Use the observed public holiday entry when calculating work dates, and keep the commemorative date visible if planning an activity. Do not assume that weekend ANZAC Day rules are identical in every state or in every year.

Regional show Fridays can create a local three-day weekend

Where a show-day holiday applies, its Friday date can join the normal weekend without an extra leave weekday. In 2027 the five dates are 2, 9, 16 and 23 July, then 13 August. Check the show-day comparison for the names and regions.

A longer local break could use four approved leave weekdays before the Friday, joining two weekends for nine days away. Count only your applicable regional holiday. Another region’s show day is not an additional holiday that can be inserted into the same leave plan.

Christmas: distinguish full days from evening holidays

Additional Christmas and Boxing Day holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December can join three approved leave weekdays on 29–31 December. For a standard weekend roster, that creates nine days from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January 2028. Check 2028 separately before extending it further.

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are part-day holidays from 7 pm to midnight. They do not remove an entire daytime leave weekday from this calculation. Use the Annual Leave Planner and Long Weekend Planner to compare options, then verify timing, coverage and roster together.

Common questions

How can Picnic Day 2027 become a nine-day break?

For a standard weekend roster, approved leave on 3–6 August joins Picnic Day and two weekends, giving 31 July–8 August.

Does Christmas Eve save a full leave day in the NT?

No. Its public holiday period starts at 7 pm. Do not deduct a full daytime leave weekday simply because it appears in the calendar.

Are regional show long weekends available to everyone in the NT?

No. Each depends on the official show-day region and the workplace arrangement.
